QIU WEILIU
Qiu Weiliu,academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences,born in October 1932 at Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, graduated from School of Stomatology, West China University of Medical Sciences in 1955. Dr. Qiu is currently honorary dean of School of Stomatology, Shanghai Second Medical University; director of Shanghai Stomatological Clinical Center; councillor of Chinese Medical Association; vice president of Chinese Stomatological Association(CSA); president of Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, CSA; honorary president of Head and Neck Tumor Surgery, China Anticancer Association(CACA); councillor of International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; fellow of International College of Dentists, International Association of Dental Research and American Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons.
Dr. Qiu is engaged in oral and maxillofacial surgery over 50 years, specializing in oral and maxillofacial tumor surgery, maxillofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and TMJ surgery. Dr. Qiu attributed himself to immediate reconstruction after resection of oral and maxillofacial tumors, and first described the use of total forehead tunnel flap early in 1960s. He is the first to report the method of “maintenanceof the needle after vital energy”for acupuncture anesthesia in oral and maxillofacial surgery. In 1970s, he introduced and conducted microsurgical technique in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, and performed simultaneous procedures for ankylosis of TMJ with OSAHS at the same time. In the end of 1970s, he first undertaken combined cranio maxillofacial resection for patients with advanced oral and maxillofacial malignancies.
Since 1980, more than 30 and 26 students were awarded Ph. D. and Master degree respectively under his supervision. 22 subjects (24 times) were awarded National Invention Prize, Scientific & Technological Advancement Prize from Ministry of Science & Technology, National Education Commission, Ministry of Public Health and Shanghai Municipality, respectively. More than 14 books were published as editorinchief including Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Theory and Practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery etc. and over 20 treatises as a contributor, such as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, etc. Dr. Qiu has published more than 300 scientific papers worldwide. He was elected editorinchief, vice editorinchief and member for more than 20 journals, and is the Chinese editorial member for some foreign journals, such as Oral Oncology.
Dr. Qiu has visited United States, France and Japan, etc. for academic exchanges more than 30 times. In 1989, he was invited as the keynote speaker (indeed the first Chinese scholar) to give lecture on “Management of Head and Neck Tumor: The Experience in China in the 71stAnnual Meeting of American Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery led by Dr. Qiu is one of the key departments of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality, and awarded model unit many times. He himself was awarded, the National and Shanghai municipal “Model Teacher”, “Model Worker” of Shanghai municipality, etc.
