Li Yu, born in Shangdong Province in 1944, a Master of Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Doctor of Agriculture of the Tsukuba University, Japan, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Agriculture, a professor, a doctoral supervisor of the Jilin Agricultural University, a member of the fourth and fifth Discipline Appraisal Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the chief editor of Journal of Fungal Research, an editorial board member of Mycosystema(till 2009) and International Medicinal Mushroom, a National Young and Middleaged Science and Technology (management) Expert with great contribution, a National Excellent Educator and Science and Technology Worker, enjoying the Special Government Allowance of the State Council, the incumbent president of the Mycological Society of China, vicepresident of the China Edible Fungi Association.
In the recent 30 years, Li Yu has devoted himself to the research of the Mycology and edible fungi engineering and industrialization. He combined the basic theory with the applied technology, relying on the innovative achievement, to solve technologic problems of the northern edible fungi engineering, which promoted the edible fungi industry’s upgrade. He established a Fungus GenBank that is of high rank in the nation, in which more than 400 species for Myxomycetes only, occupying 2/3 of the world known species. There was no new species named by Chinese until Li Yu had reported 38 new species, occupying 1/17 of the recent world new species. He published 2 unique monographs at home and abroad with rank of Order, the only one English monograph in this field and Flora Fungorum SinicorumMyxomycetes. Besides, The results awarded the Second Prize of National Natural Science and the First Prize of Jilin Provincial Advance of Science and Technology.
Li Yu has screened and cultivated 39 species edible fungi, in which 6 species passed the state trial, and improved creatively 8 key skills, including Cultivating the Jew’s Ear with Full Sunlight, and established 21 productive demonstration base, spreading with the mode of Five in One. More than 8000 persontime core technicists, with 30 thousand peasants were guided and trained, and 5 billion bags were spread in total, creating almost 6 billion direct economic efficiency.The results awarded the First and the Second Prize of Jilin Provincial Advance of Science and Technology.
Li Yu has founded Journal of Fungal Research, established Engineering Research Center of Chinese Ministry of Education for Edible and Medicinal Fungi, junior college course for Edible Fungi, undergraduate course for Applied Biology(for Edible and Medicinal Fungi) and concerned doctoral program and postdoctoral mobile research station which are the provincial key disciplines and have State Key Lab(training base). He is one of the first founders who established the complete system of Mycology and Edible Fungi Engineering faculties with a train of junior college, undergraduate, master, doctor, postdoctor. His team was awarded National Educational Team, which gained the Second Prize of the National Educational Achievement for one time, the First Prize of the Jilin Provincial Educational Achievement for three times. He, leading his team, took charge of more than 40 national or provincial research projects. Li Yu’s contribution towards Fungi undertaking of China is extraordinary.
